Mart Hughes
Narrative::
This is an exploration of the north shoreline of Halfmoon Bay from Coopers Green to Smuggler Cove and return via the South Thormanby shoreline. The shoreline is mostly along the undeveloped Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park. The shoreline is a spectacular rock and cove experience and Smuggler Cove is a sparkling gem. The total distance is 10 miles. The South Thormanby shore line requires two crossing, the larger is a half mile, the smaller a third mile. There are three landing locations; Brooks Cove, Smuggler Cove, and Pebbly Beach.
Route
From Coopers Green to the north Halfmoon Bay shoreline. Explore the shoreline to the Thormanby Island channel then the shoreline to Smuggler Cove. Lunch at the end of Smuggler Cove. Return route across Thormanby Channel then along the island shore to Pebbly Beach then cross the channel to the mainland. Continue along the outward route to Coopers Green.
Trip Time
4 – 7 hours
Tide and Current
https://www.tides.gc.ca/en/stations/07830/2026-07-22?tz=PDT&unit=m
During the Sunshine Coast event the tide pattern functionally a single daily low and high. Low tide is at 08:08 at 4.2 feet and flood is to the high at 16:09 at 13.3 feet. The current is from the SE until 16:00 when it goes slack. The current heading is to the northwest through the mainland South Thormanby channel.
Wind
Three dominant wind patterns are present at Halfmoon Bay (Gemmrich & Pawlowicz 2020)
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07055900.2020.1735989#d1e181
. Wind from the SE would be in the direction of the flood and lengthen the wave length. Wind from the SW would be on the lee of South Thormanby Island. Wind from the NW would be in opposition to the flood and produce short wave rough water between the Thormanby Channel. AM wind expected to be light with increasing wind or direction change in PM.
In event of unfavorable conditions the route can be shortened by eliminating the Thormanby island crossings or the Smuggler Cove route.
