Narrative:
Come join us for a relaxing counter-counterclockwise paddle around Ross
Island. The other Sunday morning trip (counterclockwise) is full, and we
(Joseph and Phyllis and Amber) want to paddle anyway, so let's make it so.
There's a good chance we'll encounter those other OOPSters out on the water;
we expect to run into them at the tip-top of Ross Island, eating lunch and
looking for agates ;-)
It's a relaxed L1 in wonderful conditions, the water is warm enough to not
require immersion protection, and we're early enough that it won't be too
hot, and we should avoid most of the recreational power boaters. In fact,
since we're going to pretty much hug Ross Island, even the landing types are
L1 for this trip.
Please bring snacks/lunch/water, and sun protection. You need to pay for
parking, and you need your Oregon waterway access permit. If you want to
practice rescues toward the end, consider wearing a shorty and bringing your
noseplugs, goggles, and dry clothes.
Another nice part of this paddle: there are boating restrictions which will
make it even nicer. Details (with emphasis added) below.
cf.
https://www.portland.gov/fire/rules-effective-may-1st
"a **slow no-wake zone** extension from the Holgate Channel past the tip of
Ross Island including the Ross Island Lagoon that's in effect year-round."
The Holgate channel is on the east side of Ross Island. We'll return coming
back along here.
"a seasonal pass-through zone from May 1st through September 30th from the
Hawthorne Bridge to Waverly Marina [Ed: just south of the Sellwood
Bridge]. Operators must pass through this zone above 5 miles per hour and
**not play in the area**. Also, **towed watersports activities are not
allowed** in this zone." That's the westside of Ross Island -- powerboats
can't dawdle, and must pass through at speed.
cf.
https://www.oregon.gov/osmb/boater-info/pages/lower-willamette-river-rules.aspx
And FYI, **wake surfing is not allowed** from the Hawthorne Bridge (RM 13.2)
going all the way upriver (south) to Willamette Falls (RM 26.7).
