Narrative:
This is a trip I have done previously, enjoyed very much and would like to do again. Port Orford is a commercial fishing port without a harbor. Boats are raised and lowered into the water by crane each day, interesting to watch the process.
We will be launching from the beach on Dock Road just before reaching the Port of Port Orford. Fairly easy carry from the road to the beach. That beach is sheltered from the ocean waves, so no surf launch is needed. We will follow the seawall and then enter Tichenor Cove and pass on to Nellies Cove, that will be the turnaround point for this trip, conditions after this point can get sportier that a Level 2 trip. These coves do give you some protection from any wind; most winds come from the north at Port Orford. There are some great cliff formations along the way, it’s part of Port Orford Heads State Park.
This will be Level 2 trip if we stay in the shelter of the two coves and headland, following fairly close to shore. If conditions are not appropriate for a Level 2 trip, we will find other options. You will have some moderate swells and some winds and should be comfortable in these conditions.
