Full Name:
Chris Mayou
Narrative:
We’ll circumnavigate Oswego Lake, which has only recently opened to public access after extensive legal challenges. This is very much an urban paddle, and the launch is not meant to be a kayak launch, but it works! Expect to be on the water for three hours, paddling about seven miles, with no opportunity to leave your boat. In a true emergency, I would land at someone’s private property without hesitation, but otherwise, we will not be touching shore except where we launch. There is a well-maintained public bathroom very near our launch location. Air temperature is forecast to be in the 50s to low 60s. Water temperature is probably around 60. Immersion wear (minimum farmer John/Jane) is required as there is no place to land and change into dry clothes should you find yourself swimming. A few friends and I did this trip very recently, and we enjoyed looking at the homes, gardens, and even a touch of relatively undeveloped shoreline. Parking is close, but across a busy highway which luckily has a traffic light and pedestrian crossing. You’ll need wheels to get your boat to the launch site. I’ll provide more details by email to registrants. Meet at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot to gear up and move your boat to the launch site, safety chat at 9:15, and on the water about 9:30. Feel free to bring a snack that you can easily access and eat while in your boat. This paddle is rated Level 2 mostly because there is no shore access available to us.
