Narrative: Join Monte Johnston and me for a paddle around (or next to) Reed Island. We’ll launch early and take swim (or cool-off) breaks at Cottonwood Beach and/or Reed Island as we make our way up the channel between Reed Island State Park and Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Due to the river level, we may not be able to circumnavigate Reed Island; we might have to stay in the channel and return the way we came. It will be interesting to see what the water level is at the far end of Reed Island as we round the east end of the island to (hopefully) enter the main channel for our return trip. There may be some “walking” of our boats. Bring along a short tow, painter rope, or similar in case we do.

I’m rating this trip Level 2 as it’s 8 miles round-trip, and we may do some paddling in the main channel of the Columbia. We’ll DOCK launch from Steamboat Landing Park; be water-ready by 9 a.m. Free parking, vault bathrooms. We’ll plan to return by 1:30 p.m. so that we can load boats and hopefully escape most of the afternoon traffic by leaving around 2:00 p.m. Bring wheels and plan to help others get boats up and down the ramp.

Because of my fervent desire to be in the car and buggering through Portland by 2 p.m., although this will be a somewhat relaxed pace trip, you do need to be able to keep up with the group. If you’ve had trouble with that recently, this trip is not for you. This trip is suitable for boats 12 ft. and longer; no inflatables, please. Intermediate-advanced SUP paddlers who can keep up with kayaks welcome.

Captain William Clark Park at Cottonwood Beach commemorates the historical site where the Corps of Discovery camped for six days while on their journey through this area in 1806.

Current information: We will be paddling near the shore and in a back channel in slower-moving water. If we make it to the main channel, we will be paddling with the current. I expect the current to be less than 2 knots.
