Leader: Jon Powell
Narrative:
Some cool naval ships are in town for the Rose Festival Ship Day. Come join me and Mark on an evening paddle to get a look at them. We will paddle from Willamette Park boat ramp (parking is free after 5:00) and do a brisk 6 mile paddle down toward the Steel Bridge. Some place around the Morrison Bridge we will be met by security and they will let us know how close we can get. They usually restrict the group size to around 6 so I am setting that limit on this trip. We want to leave the boat ramp promptly at 6:00 (after a short safety talk) so as to have time to be off the water by 9:00.
We will be stopped by some form of security (Navy, Police, Coastguard, whoever is on duty) and they will make sure we have all of the standard safety gear. This includes a Flashlight and a waterway pass. There is a chance they will not let us past the Morrison Bridge (it really depends on what the current national security rating is doing) but we will at least get a good view of the submarine at OMSI and the wonderful architecture of the different bridges.
The Parking at Willamette Park is free after 5:00. I have set the meeting time for 5:30, please arrive as early as you need to be ready for a 6:00 safety talk and departure. This means we should all have our boats on the beach to the right of the docks and ready to go at 6:00. We want to make sure we have time to visit the Navy and still get back before dark (sunset is at 8:57. Dark around 9:30). We do not have a rest stop planned but there are several easy places to stop for a bio-break should that be required.
Required Equipment: Personal Flashlight (check the battery). Immersion Gear: Short Wetsuit minimum.(The water temperature was above 60 but has dipped back down to 59 with the recent rain).
This will be a steady pace paddle of around 6 miles.
