Narrative: Portland Island, is part of the Gulf Islands National Park system. the 544 acre island situated south of Saltspring, is separated by Satellite Channel. The Island is a mixture of protected coves , sandy beaches and a rich intertidal ecology. Trails criss-cross the island. The crux of this trip is a 1NM open water crossing of Satellite channel with some potential BC ferry traffic. I ask participants to be able to maintain a 3kt pace for 20-30 minutes as we cross the channel out and back. Please consider your comfort in wind and swell if conditions deteriorate. We can take our time, lunch, and leisurely explore as we circle the island. There are apparently a number of campgrounds and trailheads. We might take a short hike depending on group interest.
