Narrative: This trip is a circumnavigation of Portland Island via Fulford Harbor and Russell Island. We’ll put-in at Kingfisher Cove, travel west along the coast to Fulford Harbor and then cross to the west end of Russell Island for a short break. Paddling along the southern shore of Russell Island to the east end we’ll then make an open crossing of 1.4 nm to Portland Island. We’ll then paddle clockwise around Portland Island, stopping for lunch and breaks as needed. Once we complete our circumnavigation we’ll repeat the open crossing back to Russell Island and paddle along the north shore to the west end before returning to Kingfisher Cove. Total distance is approximately 9.5 nm.

The path from the parking area at Kingfisher Cove is somewhat steep. Wheels are highly recommended. There are two open crossings on this trip that intersect two ferry routes. Paddlers are expected to keep a 3 knot pace and be comfortable in open water. Bring a tow rope if you have one. Parking is limited so expect to carpool to the launch. Traveling as a group, we’ll leave Ruckle at 8 am so we can be on the water by 9 am.
