- This trip is limited to members with a wet exit certification (except for level 1 trips when the paddler is not using a spray skirt....if the paddler is wearing a spray skirt on a level 1 paddle, the Wet Exit Certification is REQUIRED). To successfully register you will need to sign into your OOPS member account, and your account will need to be a member of the "Wet Exit Certified" group if you intend to wear a spray skirt. Your acceptance is conditional on approval by the Organizer, who may contact you with questions about your skills and equipment. If the measured water temperature is different enough from that listed below to warrant a change in required immersion protection, the Organizer will contact all participants and the Trips Board member with the update at least a day before the trip.

Activity Title: Scappoose Bay to Sand Island Sand Castle Competition L2, 8-7-22
Date of Activity: 8/7/2022
Last year, on a trip from Scappoose Bay to St. Helen’s Sand Island, we happened upon the day-old “remnants” of sand sculptures from a Sand Castle Competition. What fun! On this trip, we could see them when they’re fresh. To be clear, if you want to attend the full event, you should buy tickets to St. Helens’ Sand Castle Competition and take the land-lubber shuttle boat across the channel from the marina to Sand Island. But we’re only going to be on the “high tide” periphery of the event.* We’ll launch from Scappoose Bay Marina and paddle to Sand Island, partaking in as many or as few activities as are allowed once we arrive. There are no guarantees! There is live music from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. which we may or may be able to hear. Who knows? But it will be fun to find out.
The nine-mile trip offers backwater sloughs and views across the Columbia and of Mt. St. Helens. The safety chat will begin at 9:30 a.m. We'll allow about two hours for our lunch and exploration break on Sand Island. Or we may use part of that time to take a short detour over to the Sauvie Island lighthouse if the options on Sand Island are limited due to the Sand Castle Competition. We’ll head back upriver to Scappoose Bay by 1:30 p.m., arriving around 3:00 or 3:30 p.m.
We may have a bit of wind, so you need to be comfortable paddling in 10-12 mph wind and some waves for this trip. This level two trip is suitable for boats 12 ft. and longer; no inflatables, please. Plan to arrive by 8:45 a.m. to allow time to unload, park, and be ready to be water-ready by 9:30 p.m.
There are vault toilets on Sand Island. There are public restrooms at the marina parking area, and a day-use fee for parking (credit card or cash). The marina is easy to find. From Portland, take Hwy. 30 to Warren, turn right on Bennett Rd. at milepost 25.8, then an immediate left on Old Portland Road. You’ll see the Scappoose Bay Paddling Center and the marina.
*The people of Oregon are the owners of the submerged and submersible land (“beds and banks”) underlying all navigable and tidally influenced waterways. In most cases, this ownership extends to the line of ordinary high water or high tide. . .
