Narrative: Our destination is James Island, a Washington State Park accessible only by boat. This small island has 1.5 miles of hiking trails and vault toilets. We’ll plan on a leisurely lunch so that our return takes advantage of favorable currents through either Lopez Pass or Thatcher Pass. Our trip may circumnavigate Decatur Island for a total of 15 miles, or we can retrace our outgoing route for a total of about 12 miles. Launch at 10:30 a.m. from Hunter Bay County Dock. Go through Lopez Pass about 11:30 a.m. to noon with a 1.5 knot current flowing east, the direction of our travel. Following lunch on James Island, we will return via Lopez Pass at about 3 p.m., close to slack, or we will circumnavigate Decatur Island via Thatcher Pass. Thatcher Pass will have about a 0.7 knot flow going east to west in the direction of our travel at 1:30 p.m. All travel will be close to the islands we are paddling next to.
