Narrative: How about a quick warm-up paddle in the mighty Columbia on Wednesday before checking in at the campground? We’ll stay close to shore and head east from the John Day Boat Ramp in a protected area of the Columbia River--Cathlamet Bay’s South Channel. We’ll paddle upriver for about an hour, then turn back. If wind conditions make paddling difficult in the bay, we’ll explore John Day River instead. We'll be paddling within the Lewis and Cark National Wildlife Refuge.

We’ll launch at 1:00 p.m. from the John Day Boat Launch on the John Day River, a 30-minute drive from the campground. From Astoria, the ramp is 1.7 miles east of the Tongue Point turnoff. Arrive early enough to be water-ready by 1:00. Maybe arrive around noon with your lunch. $3 parking fee. Flush toilets. Please register on the OOPS Calendar so I can see if there is interest in this trip.
