Narrative: I’m free Monday afternoon, and it looks like a great day to be on the water. While others slog through commuter traffic, we’ll be paddling the mighty Columbia. I hope a few others can work with this last-minute invitation to join me on a round-trip paddle from Rooster Rock State Park upriver and around Sand Island. We’ll stay on the Oregon side of the river. Total distance is about nine miles. We’ll head upriver with an outgoing tide along the back side (south side) of Sand Island. I expect our upriver trip and a break on the island will take three hours, but the trip back will be closer to one hour as we’ll have the current and last remnants for the tide with us. We’ll break for a snack or dinner on Sand Island; it’s a short climb to the top of the dunes for a view to the north. Please arrive by 1:15 p.m. We’ll get ready to launch at 2:00 p.m. Drysuits are a must. My goal is to be off the water around 6:00 p.m., but no guarantees! By the time we load up, the commuters will mostly be off the roads. Sunset is around 7:30 p.m. Park at the far west end of the parking lot by the boat ramp. There are restrooms available, but possibly only the ones at the other end of the parking lot will be unlocked. State park permit or fee required. This level two trip is suitable for boats 12 ft. and longer; no inflatables, please. Intermediate-advanced SUP paddlers who can keep up with kayaks are welcome. We will observe the Four Ps: Please Plan to be a Pod Participant! If you are a lone wolf, this is not the trip for you.

Water temp 43; air temp 55. Current 1.5 knots. Winds NW 6 mph.
