Narrative: Let's get lost! The East, upstream, and of the Puget Island complex is a maze of sloughs marshes and reedy islands. At higher tides, there are passages that don't show up on the chart. One of the islands in this area looks a lot like a Whales fluke, hence the name.

We'll park at the parking lot east of the ferry on Puget Island and paddle East into the maze and then paddle wherever we wish. We can wander back into Birnie Slough, go in and out the islands that border the mainstream of the Columbia, and go around and around in the area of the Fluke.

Birdlife abounds in this unspoiled region. A few houses lined the Puget island shore, but otherwise the areas uninhabited. We should have fall foliage still, so binoculars and cameras are a good idea.

High tide is late in the afternoon, so it's a leisurely trip with a late start. Post-paddle dinner at the Masthead in Longview.

Parking at the put in requires a Washington Discover Pass, available online (https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/#/catalog/products). When registering, please let me know if you have a Discover Pass so we can arrange carpools.
