Full Name: Moulton Avery Email address: Moulton.avery@coldwatersafety.org Activity Title: Scappoose Bay - Creek Paddle, Level 1 Date of Activity: 6/17/2021 Narrative: This will be a leisurely 5 mile round-trip paddle departing from the Scappoose Bay Marina. We'll head SW for approximately 1/2 mile and then enter a picturesque creek that winds through the woods. We'll follow that for approximately 1.25 miles until we reach a small bridge and then return by the same route. The majority of the creek has overhanging trees on both sides which provides shade and makes for a nice cathedral effect. Trees that have fallen into the channel have been cut back sparingly so that the trip gives paddlers the opportunity to maneuver through them. This is a great opportunity to practice your bow rudder strokes! We'll take advantage of the 10am high tide which should allow for plenty of water in the creek. Because of the confined nature of the creek, we're limiting this trip to 8 kayaks - 6 participants and 2 TOs. If you haven't paddled here before, please see the attached map for guidance. The marina has a separate dock for kayak launching and designated parking for unloading kayaks. It's a 400 foot carry from those spaces to the dock, so you may want to consider bringing wheels. If the unloading spots are in use, you'll have to get your ticket from the kiosk, park in the lot, and wheel or carry your kayak down to the dock. That's an 800 foot carry from the middle of the parking lot, in which case wheels are your best friend. Next Adventure has a rental center here and there's a very handy floating kayak platform that makes dock launching very easy, but it's a one-kayak-at-a-time platform, so please be on time and arrive by 9am so that we can get all the boats down on the dock, have our safety briefing, and launch by 10am. Regarding thermal protection: A 2mm wetsuit or a drysuit over a long-sleeved poly top is satisfactory. If you aren't familiar with how to keep cool while wearing thermal protection, please read this article: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XYlNdjq9kEyUvfe7BJiwewKHVX--C4s1/view?usp=sharing Meeting Time: 9:00:00 AM Launch Time: 10:00:00 AM Type of activity: Paddle Trip Put in: Scappoose Bay Marina Take out: Same Route Alternative for bad weather: No alternative route.
