    Hello again Cascade Lake paddlers,

This will be my last post (also sent as an email) before the first trip on Tuesday (unless something comes up).  Our weather looks nice.  Highs in the low 70s at the lakes and in the low 80s in Bend.  Water temperatures are still cold!  These lakes are snow-melt, and the snow melted fairly recently.  Please bring various immersion-wear options.   My cell number is 503-510-2005.  It seems it would work at Sparks and Hosmer, as it’s so close to Mt. Bachelor, but I don’t know for sure.

PARTY TIME!  Everyone is invited to our Tuesday (potluck night) and Wednesday evening (your own meal or maybe some potluck leftovers) get-togethers:

Home of Ames Hendrickson and Patty Fernald, 61867 Somerset Drive, Bend 97702.

Day 1:  Sparks Lake.   10:45 a.m. arrival/11:30 launch.  We launch from the Day Use Area.  Vault toilets.  $5/day parking fee which can be purchased onsite or or use one of several passes: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/deschutes/recreation/recarea/?recid=39014

Day 2:  Hosmer Lake.  10:15 meet; 11 a.m. launch, Hosmer Lake Boating site; vault toilets; $5/day parking fee which can be purchased onsite or use one of several passes:  http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/deschutes/recreation/recarea/?recid=38998

Day 3: Paulina Lake.  10:15 arrival/11 launch.  Paulina Lake Boating Site; Paulina Lake Campground

From Bend, OR: Travel 23.5 miles south on Highway 97, then head east (turn left) for 12.9 miles on Paulina Lake Road/County Road 21 then follow the signs for Paulina Lake Campground.

Paulina Lake is located within the caldera of Newberry Volcano.  This lake relies on rain, snowmelt, and hot springs for water.  The boat ramp is on the southwest side of Paulina Lake and within a campground. It also features docks and a fish cleaning station.  Flush toilets at the Day Use  Area.  Parking at this site requires a recreation pass. Passes are NOT available at the Boating  Site, but can be purchased at the nearby Paulina Visitor Center.  http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/deschutes/recarea/?recid=71997

Day 4:  Deschutes or Crane Prairie.  Announcements may be made regarding the Day 4 trips at the previous days’ trips.  The Deschutes River trip may use a different launch or take-out location.

See you in a few days!

I am interested in the Tuesday night potluck and will bring a Mexican food themed salad of some sort. If the location of the house is too far from where we're staying I can leave the salad with someone staying at the house

Hello all.   Only 11 days until we hit the lakes near Bend!

I heard from our social hosts, Ames and Patty, that while you can stick with a Mexican theme for the Tuesday evening potluck, there is no requirement to do so.  For those of us who tend to pass on tacos, chips, and salsa, this is good news indeed!  For the rest of you, ole’!

Here is where our Tuesday and Wednesday evening get-togethers will be held:

Home of Ames Hendrickson and Patty Fernald

    61867 Somerset Drive, Bend 97702

If you have more than one boat, this might be a good excuse to use your shorter boat—something in the 12’-16’ range.  Some of the places we’ll poke into are easier if your boat is shorter.   Longer boats are fine!

I’ve scheduled the first day’s trip at Sparks Lake for a 10:45 a.m. arrival and 11:30 launch, so you have the option to drive straight to the lake that morning from the Portland metro area.  We launch from the Day Use Area.  Vault toilets.  $5/day parking fee or use one of several passes: http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/deschutes/recreation/recarea/?recid=39014

    SEE YOU AT THE LAKE!

Thought I would touch bases with everyone briefly and see what your're all thinking / or not!

Whether or not you'll be staying at the Hendrickson residence east of town, EVERYONE is invited to whatever social events WE create.  (This is not an official OOPS event.) Here are some thoughts (thanks Chris!!) trying to stick to the KISS principal.

Tuesday night:  Potluck.  I'm thinking Mexican theme...?, thoughts??

Wednesday night: Communal "eat your own stuff" night!  Potluck leftovers if there are any??  Maybe we could do smores over a campfire??

Thursday and Friday...we're all on our own.  Our facilities will remain open.

For those staying on the Hendrickson property.. Our home will stay open so you can come and go as you need to.  You will have access to our kitchen, ovens, stove, gas grill, etc.  In the mornings we hope to have coffee already made and available upon awakening.  I'll happily try to crockpot oatmeal in the am.  If interested, bring your own toppings??

    Please give us feedback...suggestions????

    Patty and Ames

Has anyone posted any requests/offers to car pool yet?  Chris tells me we should be car pooling and the forum is where she is promoting it, but I didn't find anything listed.  In any case, as usual, I'd like to car pool.  Can drive or ride along with others.  Please let me know.  Jerry
