A group of 14 OOPSters ready for a speedy paddle from Newberg to Wilsonville meet at Rogers Landing in Newberg Saturday morning. The river conditions had changed dramatically from Friday to Saturday with the CFS going from 85,000 to 110,000 overnight, that is a lot of water moving downstream. The river height and velocity also increased quite a bit. As we looked at the river we would see quite a bit of debris coming down the river including some big trees. That was the first sign this might turn out to be more interesting that we anticipated. The ideal of playing keep away from all the debris was not enticing. The current was about 6FPS or about 4.2 MPH. We also realized that at the planned take out in Wilsonville, the river narrows at that spot which would have even faster current and potential problems. Better judgement took hold of the group and the suggestion was made to switch to Hagg Lake. The entire group at the Newberg launch got back into our cars and headed off to Hagg Lake. Perhaps the paddle was not quite as exciting as the Willamette would have been, but we had the entire lake almost to ourselves, calm water and mostly sunny skies, not too bad of a tradeoff.  We added a stop at McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forrest Grove for food and beverages post paddle to round off a nice day.

Narrative: Join this paddle launching from Rogers Landing in Newberg and taking out at Boones Ferry Marina in Wilsonville. The distance is approximately 12 miles on the Willamette with a current assist. Now, the current is running in our downstream direction at about 1.5 miles per hour, that is likely to increase next week due to the forecasted rain and snow. There could be some moderate eddy's from the current if it increases substantially by next Saturday. We will meet at 10 AM at Rogers Landing and shuttle some vehicles to Boones Ferry Marina. Launch time will be at 11 AM. Total trip time should be in the 3-4 hour range depending on how much current assist we have that day. We will take a lunch break along the way, so please bring food and water, perhaps something hot to drink. I have done this paddle both in summer and winter, likely not to have much or any other boat traffic that day. There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle at Boones Ferry Marina.
